About this piece
Cabriole front legs terminate in pad feet; the square-section rear legs are united by a plain H-stretcher. The entire surface is finished in scarlet and black lacquer heightened with gilt, and the cresting retains its original gilding.
The chairs combine the formal vocabulary of the English Queen Anne period—the vasiform splat, cabriole leg, caned seat and carved cresting—with an Anglo‑Dutch chinoiserie decorative programme. The vermilion ground is characteristic of early eighteenth‑century japanned work, chosen to evoke Chinese and Japanese lacquer.
Spanish, early 20th century.
