Produced in Central Europe in the early twentieth century, this armchair sits within the Viennese bentwood tradition established by Thonet and its contemporaries. Executed in steam-bent beech, the form relies on continuous curves achieved through bending rather than joinery.
Design details include looping arms, a balloon back, a circular seat rail and a ring stretcher—elements indicative of the mature phase of bentwood production, after technical mastery had been achieved but before later modernist reduction. The timber is dark stained, with surfaces worn smooth by decades of use.
A partial paper label remains beneath the seat, now too fragmentary to identify with certainty—a common outcome of long commercial service in cafés and restaurants. Visible compression marks and handling wear contribute to the patina.
