About this piece

Polychrome carved timber santos figure of Saint Mary, 17th century, likely originating in Guatemala. The figure depicts Mary, mother of Jesus, in a white dress with a red and blue mantle.

The identification follows longstanding iconography in which Mary is clothed in red and blue, a convention established as early as 500 AD. The blue, historically a costly pigment, became closely associated with depictions of the Virgin—often referred to as Marian blue.

Condition notes: one hand is absent, lost over time.
