Design Story
Walter Knoll is one of Germany’s oldest and most respected furniture makers, known for combining understated luxury with precise craftsmanship and modernist design.
Founded in 1865 in Stuttgart as a leather furniture company, Walter Knoll originally specialized in high quality seating and upholstery. Over time, the brand evolved alongside modern architecture, moving away from traditional decorative styles toward cleaner and more refined forms.
The company became particularly influential during the rise of European modernism in the 20th century, embracing the idea that furniture should feel elegant through proportion, materials, and detail rather than ornamentation. Its designs often balanced German precision with a softer, more architectural aesthetic.
Unlike louder luxury brands, Walter Knoll built its identity around restraint. Rich leather, impeccable stitching, and sculptural silhouettes became signatures of the company’s approach. Many of its pieces feel quiet yet deeply sophisticated, designed to age gracefully rather than follow trends.
Today, Walter Knoll is closely associated with premium contemporary interiors, from boutique hotels and executive spaces to minimalist homes around the world. Its furniture reflects a philosophy where comfort, craftsmanship, and timeless design exist in perfect balance.
