About this piece
Mid-19th-century English pair, circa 1850–55, comprising a gentleman’s open-arm fauteuil and a ladies’ chair. Show-wood frames in quality solid walnut of mellow honey colour, executed in the French Louis XV manner.
Both chairs feature tall, waisted backs with matching crest carvings. On the fauteuil, the waisted back flows into open, padded arms with shaped hand grips, continuing in a serpentine line past carved, embellished knees to cabriole front legs. Curved side seat rails and a serpentine front rail with a central decorative carving complete the profiles. The ladies’ chair retains its original all-brass castor assemblies, aiding period attribution and functionality.
Upholstery includes full-height back panels for comfort and sprung seats with traditional hand-rolled and stitched edges. Current velvet covers present in two colours: one pale blue and one green. The frames are in sound original condition and retain the original hand French polish.
