Pierre Paulin: the visionary who shaped modern design
Pierre Paulin (1927–2009) was a French designer whose work bridged the worlds of art, sculpture, and functionality. Trained in stone carving and clay modelling at the École Camondo in Paris, Paulin’s early studies gave him a sculptural sensitivity that would later define his furniture designs. Influenced by his uncle Georges Paulin, an automotive designer, and his great-uncle Freddy Stoll, a sculptor, he developed an eye for form and proportion, believing that every object should be beautiful from all angles.
From early studies to design innovation
After an injury ended his career in sculpture, Paulin turned to design, working under Marcel Gascoin, a pioneer of postwar French modernism. This period exposed him to Scandinavian and American functionalism, which shaped his belief in creating furniture that was both practical and poetic. By the late 1950s, he began experimenting with organic shapes and flexible materials, developing a distinctive language that would define his career.
The Artifort years and international recognition
In 1958, Paulin began his long collaboration with Dutch furniture company Artifort. Here, he designed a series of groundbreaking chairs, such as the Ribbon Chair and the Tongue Chair, distinguished by their sculptural silhouettes and innovative use of foam and stretch fabric over steel frames. These designs balanced comfort, visual lightness, and bold form, marking a turning point in mid-century modern furniture.
A legacy of modern elegance
Paulin’s work extended beyond domestic interiors. He designed the private apartments of President Georges Pompidou at the Élysée Palace and later the presidential office of François Mitterrand. His interiors reflected his mastery of spatial composition and his commitment to integrating design with architecture.
Lasting influence and continuing heritage
Today, the family-run company Paulin, Paulin, Paulin preserves and reissues his designs, ensuring that his innovative spirit continues to shape contemporary interiors. His pieces remain timeless symbols of modern creativity, celebrated for their harmony of form, colour, and comfort.
