This large enamelled porcelain box by Samson of Paris, is decorated on the lid and front with hand painted Chinoiserie style scenes copying similar English and European depictions of Chinese life from the late 1700's. The two ends, and the back feature hand painted flowers and arabesques, all on a dark blue ground. The inner part of the lid carries a hand gilded spray of flowers. Edme Samson had a porcelain factory which specialised in copies (or fakes if you are feeling less than generous), of items from the previous century. Today his items have become collectable in their own right. It measures 183 mm (7.25 inches) in width, 115 mm (4.5 inches) in depth and stands 121 mm (4.75 inches) high. It has lost a small amount of the white enamel and the clip that held the lid to the body is also missing. It would date from around 1890.
