This pretty ladies tortoiseshell coin purse has the front decorated with an inlaid spray of silver flowers. This one is of good quality and well designed. Normally the tortoiseshell is attached to the silver plated frame, but in this case the tortoiseshell outer is attached by a strong and flexible gusset which allows a degree of expansion so as not to crack the shell if the purse is overloaded. The interior is lined with a blue watered or moire silk and features four compartments for coins or notes. one of which closes with a simple locking mechanism. It measures 70 mm (2.75 inches) long, 50 mm ( 2 inches) wide and 20 mm (.75 of an inch) thick. Overall it is in very good condition, but there is some slight loss of the silver to the frame. C 1865.
