About the Artist
Tamami Shima was one of the very few women practicing in the modern Japanese woodblock movement. Her professional output was brief yet influential, concentrated primarily in the 1960s. Works from this period are prized for their dynamic carving, sophisticated geometric abstraction, and deeply textured surfaces.
Because her editions were relatively small, examples seldom appear on the secondary market. Demand for Shima’s work has intensified over the last decade as collectors seek out her strongest early prints—especially dated examples such as Whispering Horses.
