French 19th-century floral spray ‘en tremblant’ brooch in 18kt yellow gold, constructed from multiple elements that screw together to form a large spray. The jewel can be separated to create a smaller spray—likely used as a hair ornament—and three individual flower heads that would originally have been fitted with pins for wear as hair pins; these ancillary fittings are now lost. It is also likely the piece was once supplied with a frame for mounting as a tiara.
Three tremblant flowers survive, each on spring-loaded mounts that remain responsive, giving the diamond-set elements a pronounced movement. ‘En tremblant’—French for “to tremble”—describes 18th–19th century jewellery in which diamond components are set on tremblers to animate the stones, enhancing the play of light; here, old- and rose-cut diamonds would have reflected candlelight to striking effect.
Marked with the French eagle head assay for 18ct gold, alongside several French purity marks and the number ‘11039’, likely an inventory reference.
