About this piece
Crafted in Australian cedar during the late nineteenth century, this substantial eight drawer chest reflects the expressive character of late Victorian Australian cabinetmaking. Deeply carved fruit and foliage run along the projecting side pilasters while the central drawer carries bold symmetrical scrollwork beneath a gently shaped top. The original key remains with the chest, strengthening the completeness of an already richly worked example. Warm cedar grain and generations of developed patina give the piece a commanding presence while the varied drawer configuration provides generous practical storage.
