About this piece
French writing table from the last quarter of the 19th century in the Louis XVI style. Of rectangular form with curved ends, the frieze houses a pair of side-by-side flush-fitted drawers.
The top features an inset gold-tooled leather writing surface framed by a gilt cast-brass edge moulding, mirrored by a matching moulding to the front of the frieze. Both the top and frieze are finished with parquetry banding in Coromandel, with inner and outer bandings in fruitwood and walnut. The Coromandel panels present abstract designs with line inlays in ivory. Crisp gilt-bronze mounts articulate both drawer fronts and the curved end panels.
Turned, tapered and fluted legs are ebonised with intermittent complementary walnut sections. Each leg is embellished with upper and lower “rings of beads” (string of pearls), and terminates in all-brass castor assemblies.
Condition:
- Overall excellent for age and use.
- Veneers and inlays are intact.
- Gilding shows areas of wear consistent with nearly 150 years of use; re-gilding can be arranged if desired.
- Original leather is very good but not perfect; replacement leather in a preferred colour with real gold tooling can be arranged if required.
Dimensions: 118 cm W x 61 cm D x 71 cm H
