This early Bow octagonal plate is decorated with the hand painted, underglaze blue "Jumping Boy" pattern, after a Chinese original, with a woman seated in a garden watching a boy who seems to jump. Surrounding the central scene are eight Buddhist scrolls tied with ribbons, and the rim features a lattice and flowerhead border. On the reverse are three branches or seaweed sprays. It measures 182 mm (7 1/8th inches) across the widest points and it stands 20 mm (.75 of an inch) high. It has a very fine branched crack from the rim which is more noticeable from the back. It would date from around 1755.
