A legacy of Danish craftsmanship
Founded in 1908 by cabinetmaker Carl Hansen, Carl Hansen & Søn has shaped the evolution of modern Danish furniture for over a century. What began as a small workshop on the island of Funen has grown into one of Denmark’s most respected design companies. The brand remains family-owned and continues to balance traditional craftsmanship with forward-thinking design.
The influence of Hans J. Wegner
One of the most defining partnerships in Carl Hansen & Søn’s history began in 1949 with the young Hans J. Wegner. His work helped define the Danish Modern movement and introduced the world to designs like the Wishbone Chair, still one of the brand’s most recognised pieces. Today, Carl Hansen & Søn is the largest producer of Wegner’s furniture, manufactured entirely in Denmark with close attention to his original vision.
Timeless modern design
Carl Hansen & Søn’s philosophy is built on three pillars: craftsmanship, simplicity, and functionality. These values are evident across its entire catalogue, from Wegner’s sculptural chairs to designs by Ole Wanscher, Arne Jacobsen, Frits Henningsen and other masters of Danish design. Each piece is built to last and designed to integrate naturally into a wide range of interiors.
New perspectives on tradition
While preserving its classic icons, Carl Hansen & Søn also works with contemporary designers who share the same principles. Recent collaborations with creatives like Strand + Hvass, Anker Bak, and international names such as Tadao Ando and EOOS reflect a careful expansion of the brand’s universe. These partnerships bring subtle innovation to the collection, using new materials and production methods while staying grounded in the brand’s legacy.
