About this piece

Pair of genuine English George III cassolettes from the last quarter of the 18th century, executed in bronze with applied gilt ormolu embellishments. Each vessel is egg-form and lidded, set on a tripod arrangement with goat heads to the upper supports and goat feet terminating on a circular base. The base is encircled by two applied cast rope-twist gilt mouldings.

The lids and lower sections carry applied gilt acanthus leaf decoration, with gilt finials crowning the lids. Designed for dual use, the cassolettes convert from lidded urns to candle holders by inverting the top sections. The overall composition reflects a pronounced French Louis XV Rococo influence.
