Antique English mahogany wine cooler, also known as a sarcophagus cellarette, dating to the Regency period, circa 1815. Conceived for storing and chilling wine in the formal dining room, the sarcophagus form presents a tapered body and a domed lid with a central cartouche. The front panel is detailed with geometric ebony stringing, with brass lion-head handles mounted to the sides.
The cooler is raised on a carved pedestal above a four-point platform base with carved lion’s feet on castors. The interior is fitted with a twelve-bottle divider appropriate to the scale and function of the piece. Supplied with key.
