About this piece
Originally introduced in the 1980s as part of Ralph Lauren's groundbreaking entry into home furnishings, this bed anchors a British Colonial, global-explorer aesthetic.
Because the original furniture line is discontinued, it has become a prized collector's item on the vintage market.
Key Features & Design
- Materials: Crafted from heavy, solid premium mahogany wood with a rich, dark satin finish.
- Carvings: Features distinct, intricately hand-carved tobacco leaf motifs on the posts and elegant details on the headboard.
- Structure: A mammoth, statement-making four-poster design that often includes tall finials.
- Scale: Known for its massive, grand proportions; a King or Queen frame is significantly wider and taller than modern standard frames, demanding a bedroom with high ceilings and ample clearance
His safari collection is a stand out in terms of carved Colonial style classic furniture. This same bed was featured in Jacqueline Kennedy's bedroom in the recent TV series about JFK. It has also appeared in Outlander. This bed has a matching chest and side tables for a full bedroom suite. Comes as headboard, four poles and the surrounding base of three pieces that connects it together. There is a chip on the inside of one of these bases that is not obvious as the mattress covers it. Note this is American King so bigger than Australian King. A statement bed for those that want to showcase their bedroom.
Width: 227.3 cm (89.5 inches)
Length/Depth: 228.6 cm (90 inches)
Height (to the top of the posters): 226.1 cm (89 inches)
Ceiling Height: Your room requires a minimum ceiling clearance of 2.4 metres to comfortably assemble and stand the 226 cm posts without scraping the plaster.
Wall Width: Because the King frame spans nearly 2.3 metres wide, it typically requires a blank wall surface of at least 3.5 to 4 metres to look balanced with bedside tables.
Mattress Fit: Despite the massive outer frame footprint, the interior rails are built to standard North American sizing, meaning an Australian King mattress (183 cm x 203 cm) or Queen mattress (152 cm x 203 cm) will leave small gaps or require a custom base/bunkie board to sit perfectly.
