English Regency Argand whale oil lamp in patinated and gilt bronze, c.1830, retailed by the New York firm J. & I. Cox. The body is richly detailed with classical urn, acanthus, and garland motifs, surmounted by a cast corona hung with cut crystal prisms and set on paw feet.
The Argand burner, developed in the late 18th century, produced a brighter, cleaner flame than traditional oil lamps and became the preferred domestic lighting in Regency interiors. J. & I. Cox supplied high-quality English-made Argand lamps to their New York clientele. This example is in excellent condition and has been electrified for contemporary use.
