English mid-Victorian sewing/work table, circa 1850, in solid walnut with a serpentine top finished in figured, honey-coloured walnut burl and satinwood inlay.
The hinged lid opens to a fitted satinwood compartment with an internal lift-lid for access to a lower storage well. The top is edged with a lamb’s tongue moulding and inlaid with a large central medallion and an outer border of stylised satinwood flowers, leaves and vines. The inlay is repeated on the underside of the lid and is visible when open.
The top section is supported on single end-positioned, well-turned columns enriched with fine floral and foliate carving. Short forward- and rear-facing cabriole legs with French scrolled toes continue the carved detailing at the knees. Upright cylindrical bases with inverted finials are united by a turned, tapered stretcher. The table retains its original white porcelain and brass castor assemblies.
Versatile in scale and function, this piece can serve as a sewing or work table, and equally as a lamp, side, or occasional table.
Condition: Good antique condition commensurate with age and use. Would benefit from relatively minor conservation; professional conservation to high standards can be completed as required.
