Armchair with Jacaranda Armrests
Carlo Hauner & Martin Eisler for Forma
Brazil, 1960s
A rare lounge armchair from Forma, the São Paulo company that helped define Brazilian modern furniture. The deep, sculpted shell is button-tufted and upholstered in velvet, and it sits on a slender black steel frame with a crossed base. Solid jacaranda armrests sit on fine steel arms, a warm, tactile contrast to the graphic line of the frame.
From the side, the seat and back form one generous curve that cradles the body. It is as comfortable as it is elegant.

About the designers
Carlo Hauner (1927–1997), an Italian who trained at the Brera Academy in Milan, and Martin Eisler (1913–1977), a Vienna-born architect, met in São Paulo in 1953. Their workshop, Móveis Artesanal, grew into Forma, one of the most important names in South American mid-century design. Hauner returned to Italy in 1958, and Eisler led Forma until his death in 1977.
