How to Choose the Right Coffee Table Shape

A coffee table can look perfect on its own and still feel slightly wrong once it is placed in a living room. Often, the issue is its shape: a table might interrupt the route to the sofa, sit too far from an armchair, or make an otherwise relaxed arrangement feel rigid. Before deciding between timber, stone, glass or chrome, look at the space the table needs to occupy and the way people move around it.

Start with the seating arrangement

The best coffee table shape is usually suggested by the furniture around it. A long sofa creates a different space from two armchairs facing one another, while a sectional may leave only a narrow opening for access. Mark out the table’s footprint on the floor with paper or tape, then walk around it. You should be able to reach the surface comfortably from the seats without having to turn sideways every time you cross the room. Height matters as much as shape. As a useful starting point, look for a tabletop around the height of the sofa seat, or a little lower. A beautifully proportioned table loses some of its appeal if setting down a cup requires an awkward stretch.

Bazaa's picks:

Rectangular: for longer sofas and generous surfaces

A rectangular coffee table follows the line of a sofa, making it a natural choice when you want several seats to have easy access. It also provides room for the things a living room actually holds: books, a tray, drinks and the occasional dinner in front of a film. In a large room, its defined edges can help anchor furniture that might otherwise feel spread apart. The question is how much space the table occupies beyond its top. A solid pedestal will have a stronger presence than an open frame in the same dimensions. Bazaa’s Vintage Travertine Stone Rectangular Coffee Table, for example, combines a generous top with a substantial base; it would suit a room where the table can be a focal point.

Bazaa's picks:

Round: for conversation and easier movement

A round table works particularly well when seating approaches from several directions. With no head or foot, it can sit comfortably between a sofa and a pair of chairs, giving the arrangement a shared centre. Its curved edge is also pleasant in a room where people regularly pass close to the table. That softness can be useful when the rest of the space is full of straight lines: a square rug, a boxy sofa, shelving and large windows. The table introduces a different shape without asking for a dramatic change in colour or material. A round design can still feel visually substantial, though, so consider the base and finish alongside the diameter.

Bazaa's picks:

Oval: the middle ground

An oval table offers much of the surface area of a rectangle, with rounded ends that make circulation feel easier. It is a strong choice for a long sofa when a rectangular table looks too formal, or for a compact room where corners would sit close to the route through the space. An oval also has a gentle, elongated line that pairs well with both tailored and more relaxed upholstery. Bazaa’s Mid Century Timber Rattan and Glass Oval Coffee Table shows how much the material can affect that impression: its curved timber and woven rattan bring warmth, while the glass top keeps the form visually open.

Bazaa's picks:

Square: for a balanced seating group

Square tables feel most at home when the seating surrounds them fairly evenly, such as a sofa opposite two chairs or a spacious sectional. Their proportions give everyone a place around the surface and can bring order to an arrangement with several individual pieces. In a narrow room, however, a square may project too far from the sofa. Check its depth against the space available to walk past, especially if it has a heavy base. The shape should make the seating group feel connected without taking over the floor between its pieces.

Bazaa's picks:

Let the room make the final decision

There is no shape that suits every living room. A rectangle may offer the most practical surface; a round table might make the room easier to navigate; an oval can give you a little of both. Once you have found a footprint that works, look for the piece with the material, scale and character you want to see every day. That is when a coffee table stops looking like a solution to an empty space and begins to feel part of the room.
