About this piece
A very rare Chinese Altar Table constructed and joined together with both bamboo pegs and tied with bamboo strips. The decoration on the waste area underneath the original Yew wood top and the supports at each end of the table also have the same method of construction.
Constructed from Xiang-Fe-Zhu bamboo, grown in the Hunan Province in Northan China, the bamboo has small natural dark spots in different shades and shapes which blend with the natural aged bamboo patina as the background.
Chinese bamboo items can be traced back to the Tang Dynasty (618-907), with the first record of a Chinese bamboo chair is recorded during the Song Dynasty (960-1279).
Bamboo furnishings made their way indoors during the Ming Dynasty and remained part of indoor furniture until the Qing Dynasty.
