Artist Biography – Lee Hock Kia (b. 1937)
Lee Hock Kia is a celebrated Sarawakian batik artist whose work played a formative role in the development of Malaysian batik painting from the 1960s onwards. Known for his lyrical depictions of longhouses, river villages and tropical landscapes, he combines traditional wax-resist techniques with refined colour layering and expressive linework.
A long-standing member of the Kuching Art Club and the Sarawak Fine Arts Society, Lee has exhibited widely across Malaysia, China, Brunei, Hong Kong and Australia. His artworks are held in notable collections including the Sarawak Museum, the Brunei Museum, the corporate collection of Sarawak Shell, and the Galleries of Primitif (Australia). In 1972, one of his batik paintings was acquired for the collection of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, affirming his significance in regional art history.
