Josonia Palaitis is a distinguished Australian contemporary artist whose career spans over five decades. She is most renowned for her high-profile portraiture, characterised by an extraordinary level of detail and psychological depth. Her work is held in prestigious national collections, including the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra, which houses her notable portraits of figures such as John Howard and Glenn McGrath.
Palaitis was a frequent finalist in the Archibald Prize, winning the People’s Choice Award in 1995 for her portrait of Bill Leak. While her public reputation is anchored in oil portraiture, her private practice often explores landscape and still life through watercolour and drawing, where she applies the same rigorous observation to the natural world that she does to the human face.
