Description
A hand-painted majolica ceramic charger, of circular form with a shallow well and raised rim. The central composition features a stylized profile portrait of a figure in traditional Florentine attire, rendered in a vibrant palette of violet, ochre, and terracotta, set against a tin-glazed white ground. The figure is depicted in a whimsical, folk-art inspired style characteristic of the artist, holding a vessel to their lips. The upper rim is inscribed 'LA FIORENTINA' in manganese script, framed by a cobalt blue border to the edge.
The reverse is signed in hand-painted script ‘DESIMONE’ and numbered ‘12’.

Giovanni De Simone was a seminal figure in 20th-century Sicilian ceramics. Having studied under Picasso in Faenza, his work represents a sophisticated bridge between traditional Italian maiolica techniques and the bold, Primitivist aesthetics of the mid-century Modernist movement. His studio, established in Palermo in the 1960s, became renowned for its joyful, narrative-driven designs that frequently drew inspiration from Sicilian folklore and Mediterranean daily life.
