Genuine English Victorian bureau de dame from the last quarter of the 1800s with a strong French Louis XV influence. Externally finished in bookmatched, highly figured walnut with finely inlaid front and side panels; the interior fitted in satinwood.
The upper section is a sloping drop-front bureau, panelled to the front, sides and back. An upper gallery shelf is edged by a gilt-brass three-sided gallery and flanked by carved French C-shaped scroll supports. The interior is satinwood, arranged with a central cupboard featuring a mirrored-panel door, flanked by stacked short drawers on each side, each with turned ebonised knobs. The recessed leather writing surface is gold tooled.
The base is in the French manner with a bombe-shaped frieze and a lower serpentine edge flowing into four shaped, tapered cabriole legs. The drawer front carries complementary inlay, and the knees and toes are mounted with quality gilt-brass mounts. Construction details include drawer bottoms secured by screws. The rear is fully finished, allowing the piece to freestand within a room.
