Manufacturer's Biography:
Shorter & Son (originally Shorter & Boulton) was established in 1878 by Arthur Shorter at the Copeland Street Works in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. Deeply rooted in the heart of the English potteries, the firm built a reputation for producing high-quality, accessible earthenware, majolica, and ornamental art pottery.
By the 1920s and 1930s, under the artistic direction of Arthur’s sons, Harry and Colley Shorter, the company embraced the vibrant Art Deco movement. The family famously acquired Wilkinson’s Royal Staffordshire Pottery and Newport Pottery, bringing the legendary Clarice Cliff into their fold. Cliff’s innovative influence spilled over into Shorter & Son’s designs, inspiring a transition from traditional Victorian aesthetics to bold, geometric shapes, novelty tableware (such as their famous fish-shaped services), and striking bi-color glazes. The company continued production through the mid-20th century until it was absorbed by the Crown Devon group in 1964.
