Collectors Essay
These sculptures originate from Calderstone Pottery, the studio established by Rozelle Holden in East Kilbride. Holden is notable for commissioning the pioneering architects Morris and Steedman to design "Calderstone" (1962) a radical, five-sided modernist home and studio now Category A-listed for its architectural significance.
These "mushroom" forms are quintessential examples of Holden’s organic modernist style. Hand-built and finished with meticulous sgraffito ribbing, they reflect the 1960s fascination with botanical textures and "living" architecture. Her work was featured in the 1964 Scottish contemporary craft records and remains a rare intersection of studio pottery and mid-century architectural history.
Specialist Notes
The incised RH mark is consistent with Holden’s recorded studio signature. The Glasgow Times archive confirms her residency and practice at Calderstone, distinguishing her work from other contemporary potters with similar monograms.
