Teak frames give many Danish mirrors of the 1950s and 1960s their warmth, and this one adds an asymmetrical outline that tapers towards the top before widening to a softly rounded base.
The frame follows the outline in a continuous band of teak, with smooth curves and no carved detail or ornament, so the shape and the grain do all the work.
Shaped mirrors like this sit well where a plain round or rectangular mirror would go unnoticed: above a sideboard, in a hallway, or beside a dining table. The tapering shape draws the eye upward, which helps in a room with a lower ceiling.
The glass is held in the frame by two small metal fixings. Hang it with the centre of the glass about 145 cm from the floor for a comfortable eye level, or lower above a sideboard so the two read together.
Opposite a window, a mirror sends daylight further into the room, and beside a lamp it adds warmth in the evening. Teak needs little care: wipe the frame with a soft dry cloth, and use a light teak oil once a year if the timber looks dry.
It suits homes with restored teak furniture, and it also works in newer interiors as a single sculptural piece on a plain wall. Photos show the frame and glass from several angles, including close views of the fixings.
