About this piece
Toothill Armchair - 1960S TOOTHILL SOLID AFROMOSIA WENTWORTH ARMCHAIR
(Two available — one for sale, one available for pre-order)
A true collector’s piece and one of the most refined examples of 1960s British mid-century design, the Toothill armchair is increasingly rare and highly sought after. Produced by R.W. Toothill — a smaller, quality-focused manufacturer whose work was often retailed through the prestigious Heal’s of London — these chairs embody the best of Danish-inspired design adapted with distinctive British craftsmanship. The sculptural solid timber frame, beautifully shaped arms and clean tapered legs give the chair an elegant, almost floating presence that is both comfortable and architecturally pure.
Genuine Toothill armchairs are now genuinely hard to find, especially in pairs. Most examples that surface have been heavily modified or lack original integrity. Finding two matching frames that can be restored together is particularly uncommon, making this opportunity all the more special for serious collectors and design enthusiasts.
Both chairs will be professionally re-covered in brand new Clay Fabric preserving the integrity of the original frames while giving them a fresh, contemporary finish. The result will be a pair that is as practical as it is beautiful — ideal as statement living-room chairs, refined reading seats, or as a sophisticated matched set.
Toothill’s reputation for quality construction and elegant proportions has only grown over time. These are not mass-produced pieces; they were made in limited numbers with a focus on longevity and refined form. Super rare and hard to source in this condition, a pair of Toothill armchairs represents both an investment in design history and a timeless addition to any considered interior.
