Early 1800s English George IV Davenport desk in mahogany, finished in imported Central American rosewood, in the manner of Gillows of Lancaster. The writing section slides forward on brass tracks to provide knee space. The sliding top is edged with a three-sided pierced brass gallery and fitted with a recent gold-tooled inset brown leather writing surface.
Lifting the hinged lid reveals a storage compartment and a bank of four drawers, two of which are faux, together with a pop-out, hinged compartment for ink bottles and writing implements. Both flanks incorporate practical pull-out slides. One side carries a vertical bank of four full-width graduated drawers with beaded-edge mouldings, a pair of well-turned ebony drawer pull knobs, and original locks.
The front, side and back cabinet panels each have applied acanthus leaf carvings. The desk stands on four turned and carved bun feet, complete with original brass castor assemblies.
