Set of ten English George IV period dining chairs from the late first quarter of the 1800s, crafted by specialist chair makers in Central American (Brazilian) rosewood with fine figuring and a mellow honey tone.
Conventional in overall form yet appointed with refined classical detailing, the chairs feature curved horizontal, cantilevered top rails shaped and embellished with a central symmetrical crest carving of opposed French S-scrolls with acanthus leaf infill and Egyptianesque motifs. Drawing on Grand Tour influences, the design integrates elements from antiquity.
A lower waist rail complements the larger top rail, the two joined by a row of finely turned finials with ring turnings and vertical reeds, with short inverted finials below each rail. The rear uprights are panelled and reeded, terminating in carved Ionic Greek capitals that visually support the ends of the top rail.
Straight, vertical seat rails carry well-upholstered, lift-off seats that can be readily recovered if desired. Stylised patera are applied above the front legs. The front legs are turned and tapered with full-height bold reeds, while the rear legs are of sabre form.
