Burma (present-day Myanmar), late 19th to early 20th century CE. Small rain (frog) drum with a hollow cylindrical, slightly waisted body and two strap handles set beneath the rim. The tympanum carries five engraved concentric patterned circles around a central eight-pointed star, with four frogs positioned equidistantly at the rim. The body is further embellished with intricate engraved ornament and rosettes.
Drums of this type have long-standing ritual use in Southeast Asia. Among the Karen communities of Thailand and Burma, comparable drums are used in funerary rites to aid the deceased in their passage to the afterlife and in ceremonies intended to invoke rainfall, giving rise to the term “Karen rain drum.” The strap handles allowed the drum to be suspended from a frame or tree, typically set at approximately 45 degrees with the tympanum facing outward, and sounded with a padded mallet.
