Austrian porcelain figure of Salome holding the head of John the Baptist, designed by Karl Klaus (1889–1925) and produced by Ernst Wahliss around 1911 under the Serapis Wahliss label. Salome, daughter of Herod II and Herodias, is shown standing with her neck slightly reclined, presenting the severed head in her hands. The restrained palette—black, white, indigo blue, red and gold—is characteristic of Secessionist taste of the period.
Klaus, a student of Josef Hofmann, created several figures and decorative works for Ernst Wahliss under the ‘Serapis Wahliss’ line. This example is marked internally with the ‘Serapis Wahliss’ mark, accompanied by registration marks and a rubbed overglaze signature or inscription.
Ernst Wahliss was Vienna’s leading porcelain and ceramics retailer by the late 19th century. In 1894 he acquired a porcelain factory and began producing under ‘Ernst Wahliss Kunst, Porzellan und Fayence Fabrik’ in Bohemia (now part of the Czech Republic). Following Ernst’s death, his son Gerhard Martin Wahliss continued the enterprise and, in 1911, introduced the ‘Serapis Wahliss’ range of white earthenware decorated with richly coloured enamels and motifs in line with Secessionist aesthetics.
Condition:
- No chips or cracks; free from crazing or structural issues
- Noted firing/glazing flaw at Salome’s chin from manufacture
- Minimal wear to the gilt decoration
