About this piece

Pair of fine-quality Japanese Kutani porcelain foo dogs, enamelled in rich polychrome. The figures date to the Meiji period (1868–1912) and are in good condition for their age.

Kutani ware is a style of Japanese porcelain from the Kutani region, now part of Kaga, Ishikawa. Production is commonly divided into two phases: an initial period in the 17th–18th centuries and a 19th-century revival. Distinguished by vivid, often dark-hued palettes that embody a lavish aesthetic, Kutani decoration is thought to reflect the long, harsh grey winters of the Hokuriku region, where bold colours were especially prized.
