About this piece
Pair of Chinese rose chairs in zitan hardwood, a dense member of the rosewood family. Historically thought to be reserved for women due to the floral name, rose chairs were a universal seating form and were often used for writing, supported by the low back and compact frame.
Constructed with traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery, the top rail, sides, and legs are continuously joined, with stretchers between, creating a square, balanced profile. The open back splat carries subtle carved details of classic Chinese scrolls.
Zitan is extremely rare, with few examples exceeding a foot in width due to its density and slow growth.
Dimensions: 61 cm W x 47 cm D x 87 cm H
Condition: Excellent antique condition, with some wear to areas of the varnish/tint.
