Mid‑Victorian English secretaire bookcase/display cabinet in selected tiger‑stripe Honduran mahogany with fiddleback mahogany crossbanding, c. 1850–1855. Crafted with a curved cornice and vertical pediment above a pair of tall doors with full‑height glazed panels. The glazing is framed by applied raised mouldings with carved scrollwork in the French Louis XV manner. Inside, a fully French‑polished interior houses four full‑width shelves. Upper and lower inverted scrolled corbels flank the doors.
The lower section comprises a deep, cantilevering frieze enclosing a pull‑out drop‑front secretaire desk. The fitted interior contrasts with the exterior and includes drawers, pigeonholes, and an inset leather writing surface now worn with age. When closed, the secretaire front is crossbanded and panelled, divided by a raised moulding and finished with a pair of decoratively turned wooden knobs. Below sit twin blind timber‑panelled cupboards echoing the upper door treatment. Full‑height engaged pilasters with upper foliate scrolls frame the lower case. The whole stands on a fixed plinth base.
Condition: Excellent for age, retaining the original polish and aged patina. Leather writing surface worn; can be professionally replaced and gold‑tooled if desired. Complete with upper and lower cabinet keys.
