By 1840, it is estimated that there were only around 140,000 settlers in the whole of Australia. Given this small market, and a natural attrition rate, this makes any goods made in Australia prior to the population boom of the gold rush years, very scarce indeed. The base of this cedar chiffoniere dates from around 1840 and the top is around the same age, if not slightly earlier. Both the top and the base show a wonderfully rich, mellow colour. The two shield shape doors in the base are flanked by half turned baluster shaped pilasters. Above the doors, the front of the drawer is veneered in book matched flame cedar. The top features two shelves supported by baluster shaped supports and the shaped back has fielded panels. The side panels to the top were added later, but, as the hand forged nails attest, not long after it was made. Even though it is a marriage, the base and top go together to form a very pleasing piece of early Australian furniture. It stands 1755 mm high, is 1120 mm wide and has a depth of 555 mm.
