This is a very fine quality example of a genuine antique French 19th century Louis XV style Card Table / Games Table in the manner of Andre Charles Boulle ( 1642 - 1732 ) who was the famous cabinet maker to King Louis XV. of France.
This very fine Table has a fold swivel and fold over top of serpentine form over a frieze section of complimentary shape supported on four elegant shaped and tapered cabriole legs.
The table top is magnificently inlaid with intricate fine brass inlays in patens with tortoise shell ( which is really turtle shell ) between the brass. At the centre of the panel is Helios ‘Titan God of the Sun’ in his chariot pulled by winged horses bringing light to the world. Both layers of the top have a continuous applied decorativemolding.
When opened the table reveals a wonderful interior of an ebonised border with a banding of brass and shell inlay. Sandwiched between the Ebony and the green baize playing surface is a gold tooled leather trim which is a lovely touch.
The frieze or apron conceals the storage area for cards and game pieces which is accessed via the swivel top when opened. The frieze is embellished by front side and even rear panels of brass and shell inlays bordered with applied bronze moldings.
It is indicative of the superior quality of this piece that the rear is embellished the same as the front and centred in each is a gilt bronze mount of Louis XV.
The four elegant legs are nicely curved and tapered in the Cabriole manner nd feature brass and shell inlay all the way down from the bold applied castings of female figure heads at the top and decorative toe sabots at the bottom.
Condition: excellent for age. The top and playing surface have been superbly restored and the rest is untouched original.
