A superb, exhibition quality, genuine, Antique English, early Victorian, 1840 / 1845 circular, Occasional Table with a Polychromed tilt top. The circular top having a Highland hunting scene with a Stag and Dogs. The whole standing upon a barley twist center column with a tripod leg formation ending in scrolled feet. The top, column and legs are all gilt ‘foliate’ embellished. The table is stamped under the top section by the renouned Jennens and Bettridge of 3 West Halkin Street, Belgravia, London.
Jennens & Betteridge were highly regarded for producing papier mâché wares. Acquiring the workshop of Henry Clay, ‘ Japanner’ to George II and the Prince of Wales in 1816. Their original premises being in Birmingham, they opened in London, Belgravia in 1835 and later established premises in Paris and New York.
This is a rare earlier piece as it is made of timber and features polychromed decoration. Being of far simpler design than their later Victorian papier mâchè work.
This is a highly collectable piece of exhibition quality furniture..
