Sergio Rodrigues
Sergio Rodrigues is one of the most influential figures in Brazilian Modernist design. His work redefined furniture by merging contemporary aesthetics with Brazil’s cultural identity. Through his innovative approach, Rodrigues introduced a new perspective to modernist design.
The rise
Born in 1927, Rodrigues studied architecture before shifting his focus to furniture design. In 1955, he founded OCA, a company dedicated to original creations that reflected Brazil’s identity rather than imitating European trends. His designs embraced organic shapes and generous proportions, blending modernist ideals with everyday comfort.
The Mole Armchair and international recognition
In 1957, Rodrigues introduced the Mole Armchair, a design that would become an enduring symbol of Brazilian Modernism. Its deep, cushioned seat, oversized wooden frame, and hammock-style leather support challenged the rigid minimalism of European design. In 1961, it won first prize at the IV Concorso Internazionale del Mobile in Italy, securing international recognition.
A lasting influence
Rodrigues' work continues to be celebrated for its craftsmanship and authenticity. His use of native wood, leather, and woven elements reflected both Brazil’s natural resources and artisanal traditions. Today, his designs remain highly sought after, with collectors and designers appreciating their timeless appeal.
