Piero Lissoni for Cassina – “Flat Series” Credenza
A striking example of Italian contemporary design, the Flat Series credenza by Piero Lissoni embodies a minimalist, architectural approach defined by precision, proportion, and material contrast.
Designed circa early 2000s, the piece features a long, linear silhouette in a deep black lacquered or stained finish, paired with a white marble top (Carrara or similar) that is subtly recessed within the frame—creating a refined, almost floating surface.
The composition is clean and highly functional:
- Three-drawer configuration (typically one larger central drawer with two smaller flanking drawers)
- Minimal metal pulls maintaining a flush, uninterrupted facade
- Slim cylindrical aluminium legs, giving the piece a light, elevated appearance
- Constructed from enameled MDF, marble, and aluminium
At over 2.7 metres in length, it has a strong horizontal presence while remaining visually restrained—hallmarks of Lissoni’s design language, which is rooted in rigour, simplicity, and proportion.

Founded in 1927 in Meda by brothers Cesare and Umberto Cassina, the company originally produced handcrafted wooden furniture before evolving into a pioneer of industrial design in postwar Italy. As modern architecture began reshaping Europe, Cassina became one of the first companies to bridge artisanal tradition with large scale modern production.
The company gained international recognition through collaborations with legendary architects and designers including Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, and Charlotte Perriand. Their furniture designs, particularly the LC4 Chaise Longue and the LC2 Chair, became defining symbols of modernist interiors.
Unlike many furniture brands focused purely on decoration, Cassina approached furniture as part of a broader architectural vision. Its pieces emphasized proportion, innovation, and material quality while maintaining the elegance and refinement associated with Italian craftsmanship.
