Louis XV Commode, French, Provence, circa 18th century
The Louis XV commode is one of the most enduring forms in French furniture. Developed during the reign of Louis XV in the early 18th century, it represented a shift away from the rigid formality of the Sun King's era toward something more human in scale and sensibility. The cabriole leg, the serpentine front, the carved apron — these were deliberate moves toward comfort and grace, and three centuries later the form still reads as exactly that.
This example is solid walnut from Provence, with two drawers, original gilt bronze handles and the quietly irregular surface that only genuine age produces. No visible signs of wear. Acquired in May 1989 from A&C Fink, a well regarded antique dealer, with provenance documentation attached to the reverse.
A piece like this is genuinely rare to find in this condition with its original hardware intact. It works equally well in a traditional interior or as a counterpoint in a contemporary space.
