Details
Shell grotto furniture has its origins in the grand garden follies of 18th century Europe, where aristocratic estates commissioned grotesque and naturalistic forms for pavilions, grottoes, and ornamental gardens, drawing on the Rococo fascination with organic texture and theatrical presence.
This chair is a 20th century realisation of that tradition, cast in composite and fibreglass with a scalloped shell seat and back supported by three scrolled and ridged legs that reference coral and sea creature forms with considerable sculptural confidence. The piece has been left in its natural aged patina, which has developed a depth and tonal range across the grey and white surface that a restored finish could not replicate.
It has previously sold through Christie's auction and been featured in The Times, and forms part of a larger grotto suite. A interior or garden space that is already operating at a curatorial level will understand immediately what this is and what it requires around it.
