About this piece
Patinated plaster figure of a woman by Maxime Fillon (1920–2003), finished in a faux bronze patina and signed to the base.
The figure stands in strict frontality on a shaped rectangular integral base. Arms hang pendant and close to the body, the weight distributed evenly across both legs in a pose of quiet, archaic stillness. The broadly modelled face, framed by long straight hair to the shoulders, presents wide-set eyes beneath a smooth brow; the features are simplified to essential geometry while retaining human presence.
The body is generously proportioned, with full hips and a rounded abdomen, rendered with the direct, unhurried touch of close observation. Deliberately preserved tool marks animate the surface, lending raw, tactile vitality. The deep dark brown patina shows a warm terracotta undertone at the extremities and along the base, introducing subtle tonal variation.
Note: The work is characteristic of Fillon’s mature sculpture—rooted in the humanist figurative tradition of inter-war French sculpture and inflected by the primitivising tendency shaped by Maillol’s monumental femininity and the archaic directness of pre-classical Mediterranean forms. The strict frontal stance recalls the kouros and kore of ancient Greece and aligns with the folk‑inflected modernism associated with the successors of Camille Claudel, imparting a votive quality that sits beyond its mid‑twentieth‑century moment.
