About this piece
European Brutalist oak low table, circa 1960s. A thick square top formed from solid planks of pale oak, the surface bleached to a warm flaxen tone with a dry, untreated patina. Generously rounded edges lend a sculptural presence to the otherwise utilitarian form.
Set on four splayed, rectangular-section legs of substantial girth, each angled outward to give a wide, grounded stance characteristic of Brutalist furniture. The legs are united by a cross-stretcher beneath the top, with straightforward, unconcealed joinery. The timber displays the natural hallmarks of aged oak, including fine checking, dark mineral veining, and a quietly expressive grain.
Aligned with a mid-century European current that prioritised raw material and elemental form over ornament, with clear parallels to the Marolles workshops and the French provincial Brutalist tradition—designers who translated the rigour of béton brut into wood.
