About this piece

Large signed oil on canvas portrait of a gentleman by the German artist Oskar Gross (1871–1963).

Born in Vienna, Gross worked primarily as a portraitist. In 1898 he won a mural competition for the Hungarian State Pavilion, which was being designed for the Paris Exposition of 1900. This work led to an invitation to decorate some of architect Daniel Burnham’s buildings in Chicago, where Gross settled in 1903 and continued his art career until 1963.
