About this piece

Antique Japanese two-panel Byobu painted paper screen from the early 1900s, spanning the late Meiji to Showa period. The composition depicts a female deer with her foal and is signed in the bottom right-hand corner. The panels are bordered in silk brocade and set within a thin black lacquer frame with brass angle brackets and other embellishments.

Byobu translates as “wind wall” and traditionally served to block drafts within Japanese interiors.

Condition: Minor tear near the signature.
