About this piece
Fine French 19th-century Louis XV style card/games table in the manner of André-Charles Boulle (1642–1732), cabinet maker to King Louis XV of France. The swivel and fold-over serpentine top sits above a complementary serpentine frieze and is supported on four shaped, tapered cabriole legs.
The top is richly inlaid with intricate brass and tortoiseshell marquetry, centred by a panel depicting Helios, Titan god of the sun, in his chariot drawn by winged horses. Both layers of the top are finished with a continuous applied decorative moulding.
Opened, the interior reveals an ebonised border with a band of brass and shell inlay. A gold-tooled leather trim sits between the ebony surround and the green baize playing surface. The frieze conceals an internal storage compartment for cards and game pieces, accessed via the swivel top.
The frieze is embellished on the front, sides and rear with brass and shell inlay, each panel bordered by applied bronze mouldings. The rear is finished to the same standard as the front, with each face centred by a gilt bronze mount of Louis XV.
The four cabriole legs carry brass and shell inlay down their length, running from bold applied female figurehead cast mounts at the tops to decorative toe sabots at the feet.
Condition: Excellent for age. The top and playing surface have been superbly restored; the remainder is untouched and original.
Dimensions: 92 cm W x 46 cm D x 79 cm H (closed)
