Antique English mid-Victorian Wellington chest, circa 1850, crafted from selected imported Brazilian rosewood.
Typical of the Wellington type, a full-height hinged pilaster serves as a single locking flap that covers the drawer ends; when this flap is locked, all drawers are secured. The upright, narrow rectangular form presents a series of flush-fitting, stacked and graduated drawers, each with a pair of turned timber pull knobs, and is set on a plinth base.
This example incorporates a deep cantilevering top frieze that forms a concealed compartment. Accessed via a hinged lid that functions as the top of the chest, the compartment contains a removable lift-out rectangular tray with a glass bottom. As the frieze projects forward beyond the drawer fronts, it is visually supported by applied carved corbels in French S-scroll form. Circular carved mother-of-pearl keyhole escutcheons appear on the hinged flap and on the faux side.
